The French president, Emmanuel Macron, will make a three-day state visit to Morocco next week, as reported this Monday by the Moroccan Royal House, which in this way considers bilateral political tensions overcome after France’s unprecedented endorsement of the Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara.
The Government of France had already announced that the visit would take place at the end of October and now Rabat has confirmed that it will take place from the 28th to the 30th. His wife will also travel with Macron, according to the official statement collected by the news agency. MAP news.
For Morocco, the visit “reflects the depth of bilateral relations”, the result of a “solid” alliance in which both Macron and King Mohamed VI have the “common will” to continue strengthening ties.
These relations, however, have not been without ups and downs, with Western Sahara as the main point of friction. The final rapprochement came at the end of July, with a letter from Macron to the Alawite monarch in which he made it clear that “the present and future of Western Sahara are framed in Moroccan sovereignty.”
In fact, the Moroccan authorities have used this diplomatic turn by France, as well as the one given by Spain in 2022, to defend that there is an international trend to recognize, if not the Moroccan sovereignty of the former Spanish colony, at least the autonomy plan. presented in 2007 by Mohamed VI.
Macron’s visit also comes preceded by a new debate opened by the UN special envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, who last week raised before the Security Council the potential partition of the territory, in such a way that Morocco would retain the northern part. The envoy himself already acknowledged in his speech that neither the Moroccan Government nor the Polisario Front had initially accepted this idea, on which France has not yet commented.
