Morocco calls HRW's accusations of using covert tactics to silence critics 'biased'

July 29 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Government of Morocco has branded as “biased” the accusations made by Human Rights Watch (HRW), which denounced on Thursday that the Moroccan authorities use covert tactics to form an “ecosystem of repression” and silence the dissenting voices of activists, journalists, and citizens critical of Rabat.

“The tendentious allegations contained in the document published by HRW will not dissuade Morocco from continuing to build the rule of law and institutions and the defense of rights and freedoms,” said Moroccan government spokesman Mustafá Baitas.

Thus, he stressed that the report “unfortunately undermines the symbols of the Kingdom”, before adding that it is “a compilation of allegations that this organization has the habit of evoking against Morocco”, according to the Moroccan state news agency, MAP.

“The discredit against Morocco has reached the point of launching unreal accusations against Morocco,” he said, while reiterating that the document published by HRW contains “serious accusations that are intended to try to put the Kingdom’s partners against him. “.

HRW Middle East and North Africa director Lama Fakih said in the 129-page report that Moroccan authorities “use a manual of clandestine tactics to repress dissidents while striving to keep the image of of Morocco as a country that respects rights”.

The document published by the NGO details these strategies through the testimonies of 89 people inside and outside of Morocco, including people subjected to police or judicial harassment, their relatives and relatives, human rights defenders, social and political activists, lawyers, journalists. and trial witnesses.
