NAIROBI, 19 Apr. (DPA/EP) –
At least 32 people have died in Kenya after several days of torrential rains and floods that have destroyed huge areas of crops and caused more than 40,000 people to leave their homes.
The Kenyan Red Cross has reported that it has been necessary to set up some 35 camps to accommodate people who have become homeless. The Nairobi area and the Great Rift Valley region are the most affected.
Kenya's meteorological services have warned of new storms in the coming days. The rainy season in the African country, which can last until the end of May, is being conditioned this year by the El NiƱo phenomenon.
The Disaster Operations Center already recommended last week the evacuation of low-lying areas on the banks of several rivers due to the risks of flooding due to the rains, which washed away a bus with almost 50 people on a Nairobi highway.
At the end of March, four people died due to flooding in Nairobi, including an officer who was swept away by the waters while participating in a rescue operation for a family trapped in the Kamukunji neighborhood.
