NAIROBI, 28 Apr. (DPA/EP) –
The UN Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS) has reported this Friday that at least 113 humanitarian workers have been evacuated from the state of North Darfur, in western Sudan, as a result of the clashes that broke out. on April 15 between the Army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
These workers, belonging to various humanitarian organizations, have been transferred to Chad, as confirmed by the governor of the aforementioned Sudanese state, Nimir Mohamed Abdelrahmán, in statements to the DPA news agency.
Thus, the evacuation includes personnel from the World Food Program, the United Nations Children’s Fund and UNITAMS itself, as well as the Norwegian Refugee Council.
In this sense, UNITAMS has thanked France for its help in carrying out the evacuations. “Many thanks to France for evacuating the members of the UN staff and other organizations from El Fasher,” the mission said in a statement in which it clarified that the special representative for Sudan of the UN Secretary General, Volker Perthes, “will remain in the country together with a small UNITAMS team.”
“We hope to be able to resume our activities in Darfur and throughout Sudan soon,” he said.
The hostilities broke out on April 15 in the context of an increase in tensions around the integration of the RSF into the Armed Forces, a key part of an agreement signed in December to form a new civilian government and reactivate the transition .
