More than 45,700 migrants crossed the English Channel in 2022, a new record

LONDON, Jan. 1 (PA MEDIA/DPA/EP) –

The last crossings through the English Channel from French territory to the United Kingdom occurred at Christmas, when two boats with 90 migrants undertook the journey, adding a total of 45,756 arrivals throughout the year, which represents a record number compared to the last year.

The British Ministry of Defense has thus reported that in the remaining six days of 2022 there were no crossings due to bad weather conditions. The data comes after London has announced measures to tackle the migration crisis.

The British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, has promised new legislation for next year to try to stop the migrant crossing, which in 2021 was 28,341, a figure that already tripled the data for 2020, with 8,417 people.

The Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, has drawn up a bill that tries to control the entry of foreign students, make it difficult for spouses to enter the UK and, if approved, will increase the minimum wages of companies that employ skilled workers.
