Chad’s Defense Minister, Daoud Yaya Brahim, reported this Wednesday that the Chadian Army has detained 320 Sudanese soldiers who were trying to cross the border unarmed in the context of fighting between the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudan Armed Forces.
The Chadian Minister of Defense has specified at a press conference that the Government has created a crisis committee to deal with the situation in neighboring Sudan at the same time that it has launched a security device on the border before the possible massive arrival of refugees, has collected Alwihda.
The Government of Chad decided on Saturday to close the border between the two countries, some 1,400 kilometers long, until further notice in the context of clashes between the RSF and the Sudanese Army, which have already left at least 270 dead.
The hostilities broke out on Saturday amid tensions over security reforms and the integration of the RSF — led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, alias ‘Hemedti’, vice president as well as the Sovereign Transition Council — within the Armed Forces. Sudanese, a key part of an agreement signed in December to form a new civilian government and revive the transition.
The talks process began with international mediation after the head of the Army and president of the Sovereign Transition Council, Abdelfatá al Burhan, led a coup in October 2021 that overthrew the then prime minister of unity, Abdalá Hamdok, appointed to the position as a result of contacts between civilians and the military after the April 2019 riot, which ended 30 years of the regime of Omar Hasan al Bashir.
