More than 30 arrested in UK anti-trafficking operation

September 23 () –

The British Home Office announced on Sunday the arrest of 31 people in a three-day anti-human trafficking operation that took place in several parts of the United Kingdom, including Belfast, Scotland, Liverpool (northwest) and Luton (south).

Immigration control teams have worked with the National Crime Agency, UK police forces and international partners. Checks have been carried out at major ports, airports and road networks, seizing £400,000 (€477,200) and ten false identity documents.

Border Security and Asylum Minister Angela Eagle said: “This government will not stand by as criminal gangs exploit vulnerable people, put their lives at risk and give them false hope of a better life in the UK.”

“Driven by greed, these gangs have no regard for human life or safety, charging exorbitant fees, preying on those desperate to escape hardship and forcing them into illegal and dangerous situations,” he said.

Home Office Immigration Inspector Jonathan Evans said the operation had been a huge success and sent a clear message that smuggling gangs who break the law would face serious consequences. “We are taking action every day to ensure we stay one step ahead of these criminal groups and dismantle them as quickly as possible,” he added.
