More than 100 dead in fighting between pro-Turkish militias and the SDF in northern Syria

MADRID Jan. 5 () –

More than a hundred people have died in intense fighting between pro-Kurdish militias and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Kurdish-Arab militias that control the northeast of the country, as reported by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Among the dead are 85 members of the Syrian National Army (SNA), an ally of Turkey, as well as 16 members of the SDF, according to the Observatory, an organization based in London and a wide network of informants in Syrian territory.

In the last two days the ENS has launched an offensive with support from Turkey against pro-Kurdish forces in Manbij to try to take the Tishrin dam, a strategic point in the north of the country.

Turkish troops reportedly bombarded the dam area on the Euphrates River with artillery. The dam itself, key to electricity production and water supply, was reportedly damaged in the fighting.

This same Sunday, the Turkish Ministry of Defense reported that it has “neutralized” 32 alleged members of the People’s Protection Units (YPG), integrated into the FDS. Four other Kurdish militiamen were reportedly killed in northern Iraq.
