More than 100 countries, including Spain, support Guterres after being declared ‘persona non grata’ by Israel

More than one hundred countries, including Spain, published this Friday a letter of support to the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, after Israel declared him ‘persona non grata’ on the grounds that he had not condemned the recent attack on large scale of Iran over Tel Aviv.

“This significant support is a reflection of the majority support of the international community for the work of the leader of the organization and the role of the United Nations,” highlighted a statement at the initiative of Chile and which had the initial support of Brazil, Colombia, South Africa , Uganda, Indonesia, Spain, Guyana and Mexico.

The document has warned that these types of measures, such as those adopted by the Israeli Government, “undermine the ability of the United Nations to carry out its mandate”, including mediation in conflicts.

“In the Middle East this could further delay the end of all hostilities and the establishment of a credible path towards a two-state solution living side by side in peace and security,” said these 105 countries, including the absences of the United States and Germany.

“In times of heightened tension, the role of the secretary general is essential to foster dialogue and promote peace and understanding (…) His work remains crucial to ensure dialogue, facilitate humanitarian efforts and promote peace and stability throughout the world,” they stressed.

“We reaffirm our full support and confidence in the Secretary General and his work. We trust in his commitment to peace and security and in his compliance with International Law (…) and the relevant United Nations resolutions relating to the situation in the East Next”, they have revalidated.

These hundred countries have urged all parties to collaborate constructively with the United Nations in order to achieve a sustainable and fair solution through diplomatic channels, as well as to avoid “actions that could weaken the fundamental role of the United Nations.” .
