6 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The president of Montenegro, Milo Djukanovic, presented his resignation on Thursday as leader of the Democratic Party of Socialists (PDS) after losing in the second round of the presidential elections held last Sunday.
“I won’t surprise you if I tell you that the evaluation of our performance in the elections has not been satisfactory,” he said in a statement after a meeting of the party he was chairing until now, according to the MINA news agency.
Djukanovic, who will remain a member of the PDS, has assured, however, that he feels “optimistic” about his future and hopes that the new interim president, Danijel Zivkovic, will help restore the confidence that the population had in the formation.
The Europe Now Movement leader, Jakov Milatovic, achieved 58.8 percent of the vote in the second round of the presidential elections held last Sunday in Montenegro, while the PDS was left with 41.12 percent.
In the first round of the elections, held on March 19, Djukanovic won with 35.3 percent of the vote, followed by the former Economy Minister, Milatovic, who achieved 28.9 percent of the vote.
