The Moldovan Parliament has approved this Friday a new two-month extension for the state of emergency decreed in the country more than fifteen months ago after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, a country with which it shares more than 900 kilometers of border.
This new extension –approved by 58 of the 101 members of the Chamber– will come into force on June 4, the date on which the previous extension, approved at the end of March, ended, according to the Moldpres agency.
The Moldovan Prime Minister, Dorin Recean, has appeared from the Parliament rostrum, where he has defended the need for this new extension due to the risks and threats generated in Moldova by the war in the neighboring country.
In this way, Recean has alluded not only to the territorial threats posed by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, but also to possible cyber attacks on public institutions or critical Moldovan infrastructures.
During the period of validity of the state of emergency, the Commission for Exceptional Situations has the capacity to dictate measures to be taken by the heads of national and local authorities, as well as by the citizens themselves.
Moldova has suffered during the last fifteen months the impact of several projectiles derived from the conflict in Ukraine and even blackouts due to damage to the electrical system. The country currently hosts some 85,000 refugees from Ukrainian territory, according to government data.
