Miyavi announces new plans in China as a rock star

Renowned Japanese guitarist Miyavi has announced that he will move to China as part of his ambitious plan to become a “rock star” in his new adopted home. In a recent interview with Nikkei, the artist shared his plans to intensify his performances in the Asian country during 2025. At the meeting, the artist also especially highlighted the dynamism of the Chinese music market and his intention to connect with a growing audience.

“Music as a form of entertainment is facing existential questions in some aspects, such as the decline of music-centered television shows. But there is a strong demand for music in China, and I want to fulfill my duty as an artist,” Miyavi stated.

The journey that led Takamasa Ishihara to become Miyavi

Born Takamasa Ishihara in Osaka in 1981, Miyavi is known for his unique style of guitar playing using finger-slapping techniques, which has distinguished him on the international music scene. His career took off in 1999 as guitarist for visual kei rock band Dué le Quartz and later went solo in 2002. Since then, he has expanded his reach as a singer, songwriter, producer and actor.

The musical journey of this successful Japanese guitarist has been diverse. After the dissolution of Dué le Quartz, the artist adopted the name Miyavi and published his first solo album, Gagakuin 2002. He eventually signed with Universal Music Group and continued to explore new sounds, from rock to more acoustic and experimental styles. In addition, he has toured the world on multiple occasions, taking his music to places as diverse as the United States, South America, Europe and Asia.

In parallel to his musical career, Miyavi has also ventured into film. His Hollywood debut came with the film Unbroken (2014), directed by Angelina Jolie, and later participated in productions such as Kong: Skull Island and Stray.

This multifaceted artist has also demonstrated his social commitment as a UNHCR goodwill ambassador. In this role, he has visited refugee camps in various parts of the world since 2013.

A new chapter of life in China

Now, his decision to move to China is seen by him and his fans as the beginning of a new chapter in his career. Miyavi perceives the Asian country as an exciting market full of opportunities. However, this is not the first time that the artist has explored new horizons: in 2007, he was a member of the rock supergroup SKIN, and in 2022 he joined The Last Rockstars, another large-scale collaborative project.

China, with its rapid economic growth and ever-evolving entertainment industry, represents an attractive challenge for the guitarist. Miyavi has performed in the country before, but his move to the country comes with a much greater commitment to establishing himself as a prominent figure in the local music scene. “The Chinese market is full of energy and creativity. “It is exciting to be part of this cultural transformation and contribute with my music,” he said.

Miyavi was born to a Japanese mother and Korean father, so he grew up in a bicultural environment that shaped his artistic perspective. Although he initially aspired to a career in football, an injury during high school led him to discover his passion for the guitar. Inspired by visual kei bands such as X Japan and Luna Sea, as well as genres such as blues, hard rock and industrial music, the artist ended up developing a distinctive style that has taken him to the top.
