The Wii U celebrates its 10th anniversary
Early today, Nintendo fans began celebrating the 10th anniversary of the launch of the Wii U, a console that was launched on the market on November 18, 2012, preceded by the enormous success of the Nintendo Wii, the same he tried to give it continuity with a refreshing proposal. At that time, the Japanese company presented a hybrid experience with unconventional control, betting a bit on the rise of touch devices. The controller had a screen that would serve as support in case of playing in a traditional way, but also allowed the game to be taken towards a portable experience.
Nintendo’s proposal with the Wii U did not get a response from the market
Unfortunately, the Japanese company did not know how to communicate well the message of what this new console represented because, incredible as it may seem, this detail worked against it since the casual public that had won over Wii was not clear if it was a new system or a new model of what they already knew.
On the other hand, Nintendo tried to compensate for the lack of power that the Wii had by bringing the Wii U closer in terms of hardware to what already existed with the PS3 and Xbox 360 which allowed for a first wave of third-party support. However, the control situation as well as the low sales of hardware and software made studios and publishers move away from this Nintendo proposal.
Despite having interesting exclusives and innovative technology for the time and the console sector, as well as the link with Wii including its online services (especially the Virtual Console), the Wii U did not rise in the market and Nintendo had no Another more than to get down to work with a similar idea but that would finally hit the nail on the head and that in the end was a resounding success.
