Ministers and high authorities will meet at ECLAC to examine the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action 30 years after its approval and the preparations for the XVI Regional Conference on Women to be held in 2025

Ministers and High Authorities of the national mechanisms for the advancement of women in the region will participate on December 4 and 5, 2024 in the Sixty-Sixth Meeting of the Presiding Officers of the Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean which will be held at the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Santiago, Chile.

The meeting, which has become a fundamental instance to evaluate the region’s progress in terms of gender equality and women’s autonomy, is organized by ECLAC, in its capacity as Secretariat of the Conference, in coordination with the Entity. of the United Nations for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women).

The inauguration will take place on Wednesday the 4th, at 10:00 Chilean time (GMT-3), and will be headed by José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, Executive Secretary of ECLAC; and Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Deputy Executive Director for Policy Support, United Nations System Coordination and Program Results of UN Women.

During the two-day meeting, the delegations will examine the preparatory activities for the XVI Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean to be held in Mexico in 2025, and which will address “Transformations in the political, economic, social, cultural and environmental to promote the society of care and gender equality.”

At the intergovernmental meeting in Mexico, it will be discussed how the construction of a care society can offer a transformative response to the crises facing the region, promoting more productive, inclusive and sustainable development, where care policies are the driving force to reduce gender inequalities and generate greater social well-being.

A special session of regional consultation will also be held at the 66th Meeting of the Presiding Officers of the Regional Conference prior to the 69th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, within the framework of the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women and the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (1995).

In this framework, Ana Güezmes García, Director of the Gender Affairs Division of ECLAC, will present the document Action for equality, development and peace in Latin America and the Caribbean: draft regional report on the examination of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action 30 years after its approval in synergy with the implementation of the Regional Agenda for Gender.

During the meeting, reports will also be presented on the Gender Equality Observatory of Latin America and the Caribbean (OIG)a key tool for monitoring progress in the Regional Gender Agenda, and the Regional Fund to Support Women’s and Feminist Organizations and Movements.
