One person was killed as a result of a week-long protest by informal miners in northwestern Colombia, local authorities confirmed on Thursday.
The governor of Antioquia, Aníbal Gaviria, assured on Twitter that the deceased was identified as Fabián Pérez, who on Wednesday night collided with a tree that was blocking the road in the municipality of Cáceres.
“We reject the violence that falsifies social mobilization,” added the president without specifying whether Pérez participated in the protest.
Informal miners have been protesting since March 2 in Bajo Cauca and northeastern Antioquia, blocking access roads, burning tires and breaking through trees. They demand guarantees from the government for their work activity and the suspension of operations against the exploitation of illegal mining in the area.
Nearly 250,000 people from the populations of the area have been affected by lack of food supply, medicines and the limitation of their mobility, according to the Government.
