Minecraft is owned by Microsoft and yet has remained a cross-platform franchise. That is why some find it strange that the Mojang game does not have a native version for PlayStation 5. Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, spoke at the Microsoft/Activision Blizzard vs. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) hearing. He there he explained that before the launch of the PlayStation 5, Sony refused to give development kits to companies belonging to Microsoft, even if they were developing games for the PlayStation 5.

“Sony was reluctant to send us PlayStation 5 development kits at the same time they were sending it to other developers, which put us at a disadvantage compared to other developers,” Spencer said. “I think Sony could have sent the kits to Microsoft just as easily as they sent it to any other distributor.”

So, since Sony refused to send PlayStation 5 development kits to Mojang, the studio Minecraft it didn’t have the tools to release a native version that harnessed the power of the new hardware. Instead, he was able to do it with Xbox Series X and S as he showed in a demo that was published in 2020.
