The president of Argentina, Javier Milei, seeks a Free Trade Agreement with the United States after the victory of Donald Trump. Argentina already has treaties with India, Israel, Egypt, and is currently in negotiations with the European Union.
The far-right president of Argentina, Javier Milei, stated on Wednesday that he hopes to close a free trade agreement with the United States after the recent victory of Donald Trump in the presidential elections of that country, given the ideological harmony between the two.
“Under these conditions we can advance in greater trade agreements with the United States,” said the Argentine president in dialogue with radio Rivadavia in Buenos Aires.
When asked if he was referring to seeking a free trade agreement, Milei responded “exactly, that’s right.”
Argentina has signed bilateral free trade agreements with Latin American nations and outside this region it has done so as a bloc through Mercosur (with India, Israel, Egypt and the ongoing negotiation with the European Union).
Milei’s statement occurs one day after the telephone conversation he had with Republican Trump to congratulate him on his electoral victory and ratify the diplomatic alignment of the South American country with the United States and Israel.
“The elected government (of the United States) feels more comfortable working with me than with other governments,” Milei said. “I told him that the world today was better because the ‘woke’ (ideology) had been defeated and that was excellent news for the US, Europe and for Argentina.”
Milei will travel to the United States on Thursday with the purpose of meeting with the president-elect in Florida and attending the Conservative Action Political Conference.
