Migration Colombia launches facial biometrics for the departure of foreigners

This Friday, June 2, at the El Dorado International Airport, Migración Colombia and Opain launched Biomig for foreigners. It is a facial recognition technology that was already used for the departure of national passengers, but from now on it can be used by users from other countries.

The purpose of the tool is facilitate the migration process for foreigners leaving Colombia.

The development of this technology, implementation and update for the use of passengers from other countries had an investment of $820,000. It is hoped that with the new technology about 450,000 foreign travelers benefit who visit the country in high seasons.

During the launch, the manager of OpainNatalí Leal indicated that “It was a collaborative effort where Opain provided spaces at the airport to get the project off the ground. It is a pioneering technology in Latin America, which was tested for several weeks with foreign people to ensure its proper functioning”.

The Biomig service for foreigners will be provided with 5 machines that are enabled at the airport. Migration Colombia mentioned that it is planned to be implemented at the airports of Medellín, Barranquilla and Cartagena in the coming years.

the tool alone can be used by people over 18 years of age due to legal issues, says Martha Hernández, deputy director of Immigration Control.

“Additionally, it will allow national security crossings to be made, which entails reviewing administrative and court order processes. It is a tool that only requires three steps to complete self-care” Hernandez added.

Its use is very simple, you just have to place the passport in the reading machine, enter the flight number and stand in front of the camera for biometric facial recognition.

“Biomig for Foreigners joins the Biomig that we have already been offering for Colombians with the same purpose: to streamline and make the immigration control process more efficient”mentioned Fernando García, general director of Colombian Migration.
