Sony will launch a slim PlayStation 5 model this year for around $399, Microsoft said in a news release. court document (page 45) which is part of the case between the company and the FTC for the purchase of Activision Blizzard. In the same document, which was presented in court on June 22 and has been made public today, the technology company also mentions the existence of a Pro model that would arrive later. He also says that Project Q will cost less than $300.

To this day Sony has not announced any new model of PlayStation 5, but the idea that sooner or later it will put on sale a more stylized and compact version than the original should not surprise anyone. It has been doing it since the first PlayStation. In addition to the story itself and Microsoft, the rumors also point in this direction. In September 2022 Tom Henderson, the same person who advanced the existence of the DualSense Edge and Project Q controller, was already talking about the launch for the second half of 2023 of a modular PS5 model with a removable Blu-ray drive.

This modular model would allow Sony to sell the console without a Blu-ray reader for about 399 euros, the same price that the Digital Edition originally had (which now costs 449 euros), while the user would always have the option of buying the removable reader to use games in physical format. This modular PS5, also known as chassis D, would reach the market with the aim of replacing the current two. What is not yet clear is the name of the console, it will hardly be called Slim, and if at the design level we have to expect big changes.

Regarding the PS5 Pro model that Microsoft mentions, there are also rumors and these place its launch at the end of 2024. For now, the information about this model is limited to talking about its existence, since there are no details about the hardware or expected performance.

Finally, in the document Microsoft also talks about Project Q, the device to play with Remote Play and via Wi-Fi to the PS5 titles that Sony presented last May. In addition to commenting on its existence, the technology company claims that this “portable version of PS5” will go on sale this year for less than $300. Sony has not yet revealed the price of Project Q. It has only detailed that it is a device with an 8-inch high-definition LCD screen that presents all the buttons and functions of the DualSense remote. The goal is to offer a portable solution for gaming at 1080p and 60 FPS.
