June 29 (Portaltic/EP) –
Microsoft considered the purchase of the video game developer Square Enix to boost the catalog of its cloud gaming platform, Xbox Cloud Gaming, on mobile phones.
The tech company is currently in an evidentiary hearing where it is facing the United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC)), which a few days ago issued a request to block the purchase of Activision Blizzard.
A series of documents to which The Verge has had access suggest that the company would have shown interest in buying Square Enix for strengthen the presence of its platform, Xbox, in Asian markets.
In addition to that, Microsoft considered at the time that this purchase could help boost “future Game Pass offers exclusive to mobile devices”, since this cloud gaming service is currently only available for console and PC.
For Microsoft, combine the “Square Enix’s robust native mobile portfolio” with theirs for Xbox could help them create a mobile native Xbox Game Pass SKU,” according to these reports.
It is worth mentioning that The Verge has also advanced the same interest that Microsoft showed to take over two other video game developers, Sega, Bungie -now owned by Sony- or IO Interactive.
