Mexico will highlight the benefits of free trade to Trump, says Sheinbaum

“There is this idea that only Mexico has benefited or that Canada has benefited. The United States has benefited in a very important way with this treaty. It is very important to write all that down,” he added.

The president said that spoke about the importance of the treaty with outgoing US President Joe Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during the G20 summit that recently took place in Brazil.

Sheinbaum explained that the document will also talk about the contribution of Mexican workers to the US economy, given Trump’s threats of mass deportations.

“They are first-class workers and contribute very importantly to the United States economy, and it is very important that all of this remains in black and white,” he noted.

“We are always going to be positive in the idea that there will be a good relationship, but we are working on all aspects,” he said.

The United States is Mexico’s largest trading partner, and the destination of more than 80% of its exports thanks to the T-MEC free trade agreement.

Trump promoted the negotiations of that agreement in his first term to replace the NAFTA free trade agreement, which had been in force since 1994.

In this latest election campaign, Trump promised to impose tariffs of at least 25% on Mexican exports unless it stops “the onslaught of criminals and drugs” entering the United States.

In addition, he plans to declare a state of national emergency and resort to the Army to carry out a mass deportation of migrants when he assumes the presidency of the United States in January, one of his main campaign promises.
