Mexico opened the market for barley grain originating in Argentina, after more than three years of negotiations

The National Service of Health, Safety and Food Quality of Mexico (SENASICA) reported the entry into that market of barley grain originating in and coming from the Argentine Republic, after more than three years of negotiations.

The opening of the market, reported by SENASICA in the Phytosanitary Requirements Consultation Module for imports, under the combination 1601-106-3156-ARG-ARG, was achieved through the joint work of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, SENASA and the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Nation. Barley is the third subcomplex of the Argentine cereal sector and its production has quadrupled in the last 20 years.

Barley is one of the fastest growing cereals in our exports in 2022. It participates with 1,608 million dollars, which represents 1.8% of total exports, with a percentage variation compared to 2021 of 70.5%, only surpassed by the increases registered in exports of lithium (236.2%) and products of the oil-petrochemical complex (78.5%). The main destinations of the barley complex were: China (USD 654 million) and Mercosur (USD 576 million), mainly Brazil (94.4%).
