Mexico loses 7.6 million dollars a day by stopping exporting avocado from Michoacán to the US

Data from Banxico indicate that in April of this year, Mexico exported avocado to the world for a value of 332.7 million dollars.

And according to USDA data, Mexico’s main avocado export market is the United States, with a share of 81%.

Figures from the Ministry of Economy indicate that what Michoacán exports to the United States is around 85% (229 million dollars).

So, taking these data into account, the daily loss reaches 7.6 million dollars.

What happens with the avocado from Michoacán and the United States?

It was on June 14 when two employees of the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) were detained while inspecting avocados in Michoacán.

Since that date, APHIS notified the Association of Avocado Producers and Packers Exporters of Mexico (Apeam) of the suspension of United States imports of the product from the entity governed by Alfredo Ramírez.

The United States ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, indicated that they are already working with the corresponding authorities to resolve the issue, and it will not be until then that APHIS lifts the suspension, but he specified that this only affects Michoacán and not other states. .

Although avocado is grown throughout the country, three states represent 90% of Mexico’s avocado production: Michoacán, with 73%; Jalisco, with 12% and the State of Mexico, with 5%.
