Mexico begins process to host the Olympic Games in 2036 or 2040

Mexico has begun the process to host the Olympic Games in 2036 or 2040, the president of the local Olympic Committee, María José Alcalá, and the country’s foreign minister, Marcelo Ebrard, announced on Wednesday.

If materialized, Mexico will become the first Latin American country to host the Olympic Games twice after doing so in 1968.

“Mexico is considered by the International Olympic Committee to compete and host the Games (…) we are beginning the path to once again be the organizers of the Olympic Games in 2036,” said Alcalá.

Mexico must comply with a series of requirements requested by the IOC to continue with the process, such as the formation of a committee and the completion of some studies.

“The Mexican Olympic Committee has started a series of steps, we are going to integrate the promoting committee and then start some studies that the International Olympic Committee asks of us. Our goal is to bring the Olympic Games to Mexico in 2036 or 2040,” Ebrard said.

“We have to install the promoter committee and determine two things: which city is going to be the venue and which other regions of the country can participate. We would have 15 years to prepare, each day you deliver different things until the Olympic Committee makes its decision”, pointed.

The next editions of the Olympic Games will be in Paris 2024 and Los Angeles 2028.
