Mexico admits US complaint about labor rights at auto parts plant

The complaint, the fifth related to labor rights in Mexico under the North American trade agreement, TMEC, was filed last week by the government of President Joe Biden.

Mexico’s Ministry of the Economy said in a statement Friday that together with the Ministry of Labor and others involved “they will review the case to determine whether or not there is a denial of labor rights.”

The request to investigate the Michigan-based VU Manufacturing factory came after activists alleged the company interfered with workers’ ability to choose their union, according to the US Department of Labor.

He also expressed concern that since at least June employees at the plant, which produces auto interior parts such as armrests and door trim for various brands, have been unable to support a new union, La Liga Sindical Obrera Mexicana.

Mexico had 10 days to determine whether to accept the US request.
