Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said Tuesday that relations with the U.S. Embassy in the country are “on hold” over recent comments by the head of the U.S. diplomatic mission in the country about a controversial judicial reform promoted by the president.
Ambassador Ken Salazar said last week that the direct election of judges, a key element of the controversial reform that has scared off investors, constitutes a “major risk” for Mexican democracy, and that any such modification must have “safeguards” to guarantee the independence of the judiciary.
“Hopefully, they will confirm that they will respect Mexico’s independence. As long as they don’t do that and continue with that policy, there will be a pause,” López Obrador said at his usual morning press conference.
