( in Spanish) – The National Association of Circuit Magistrates and District Judges of Mexico announced on Tuesday that it will maintain for an indefinite period the work stoppage that began on August 21.
Judges and employees of the judiciary have called for a strike in protest of the judicial reform enacted by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who said on Tuesday that the change “should not worry anyone.”
López Obrador also downplayed statements by former Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo, who said that judicial reform removes a counterweight to democracy in Mexico.
On Sunday, Lopez Obrador reported that he had signed the presidential decree on constitutional reform of the Judiciary.
“With the purpose of improving the Judiciary, because we need justice to reach everyone, so that there is no corruption in the Judiciary. That judges, magistrates, ministers apply to the letter the principle of ‘nothing outside the law and no one above the law,'” said López Obrador.
The president claims that the reform does not affect workers and, on the contrary, benefits them; however, employees point out that the reform would violate their rights and working conditions and that the judicial career will be affected.
