The Mexican Soccer Federation on Tuesday condemned violence in stadiums after a Mexican fan stabbed another in a Gold Cup match for the national team in the United States.
The event took place on Sunday in Santa Clara, California, where the Mexican team lost 1-0 against Qatar.
Video of the attack showed several Mexican fans fighting in the stands when another fan, also wearing the Mexico jersey, approached with a knife and stabbed one of the men involved in the fray.
The wound appeared to be near the man’s neck or upper torso, and blood could be seen oozing.
In a statement, the federation “roundly condemned the acts of violence that arose after last Sunday’s game,” wished the injured man a speedy recovery and offered to collaborate with local authorities to prevent such events in the future.
One of the last violent events involving Mexican fans took place in 2022 when around twenty people were injured in a brawl between fans that forced the suspension of a Mexican league game in the city of Querétaro.
