MADRID Jan. 5 () –
The Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, will meet with the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, at his residence in Mar-a-Lago, as reported by the Italian news agency ANSA and confirmed by the American network .
Meloni’s visit comes days before he is scheduled to host President Joe Biden, who begins a trip to Rome and the Vatican on January 9, in what will likely be his last presidential mission abroad.
The meeting, which is expected to be held later in the day, could address the case of Cecilia Sala, the Italian journalist detained by Iran last month, according to Il Messaggero.
Sala, according to Italian authorities, was arrested on December 19 in the Iranian capital when she was “carrying out journalistic work.” Rome then confirmed contacts with a view to clarifying his situation.
Italy summoned Iran’s ambassador in protest at the detention of the journalist, whom Tehran accuses of “violating the laws of the Islamic Republic.”
Foreign leaders who have visited Trump since the election include Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Argentine President Javier Milei and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
