Meloni returns to Italy for “conscience” for torrential rains in Emilia Romagna

May 20. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, has announced that she is returning to Italy from Horishima, Japan, where she was to participate in the G7 summit, to attend to the emergency caused by torrential rains in the Emilia Romagna region that have already claimed 14 lives.

“I can’t be away any longer. My conscience imposes it on me,” Meloni declared, according to the Italian press. The Italian leader has thanked the emergency service personnel, the volunteers and the political leadership that works to respond to the crisis.

“I cannot be away from Italy any longer at such a difficult time. I have to work to give the necessary answers”, added the Prime Minister.

Meloni could visit the affected areas this Sunday and will meet with his ministers on Tuesday to approve extraordinary measures.

Firefighters have carried out more than 3,000 operations in which a thousand troops have participated since the start of the storms and a helicopter has crashed in Ravenna. All four passengers have been taken to a hospital, but only one was injured.
