Nov. 10 () –
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will receive NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in Rome this Thursday, with whom she will reaffirm her government’s commitment to the West after her victory in the elections on September 25.
As reported in a statement by the General Secretariat of the Atlantic Alliance, Stoltenberg hopes to meet with Meloni at the Chigi Palace, to see Italian Defense Minister Guido Crossetto a little later.
This is the first meeting between Stoltenberg and the far-right leader, who since the election campaign has been reaffirming her commitment to the European Union and NATO, although colleagues in her governing coalition have criticized the sanctions against Moscow.
Specifically, Matteo Salvini’s League has expressed on more than one occasion its disagreement with the measures carried out by the West to penalize Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.
In addition, the former prime minister and leader of Força Italia, Silvio Berlusconi, has been a friend of Russian President Vladimir Putin for years.
Until now, Meloni has tried to camouflage those pro-Russian postulates known among some of his partners, such as the new president of the Chamber of Deputies, Lorenzo Fontana, reiterating his commitment to Western values to the different leaders with whom he meets.
