Meloni criticises Von der Leyen's "fake news" in her criticism of the Italian government

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has sent a letter to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in which she reproaches her for “fake news” in her criticism of the reforms introduced by the government she leads and included in the ‘Annual Report on the Rule of Law in the European Union’.

“For the first time” the content of the report “has been distorted for political use by some in an attempt to attack the Italian government,” Meloni said in the letter sent to Von der Leyen, according to the Italian news agency AGI.

Meloni has thus attacked the “clumsy and deceitful attacks that can only be strengthened in the devastating context of the recurrent use of ‘fake news’ that increasingly contaminate the debate in Europe.”

“It is regrettable that even the Commission’s report on the rule of law and, in particular, on freedom of information in public service broadcasting has not been spared from the professionals of disinformation and mystification,” he argued.

The European report states that public television (RAI) has breached the rules of equal conditions in favour of the government majority in the campaign for the recent elections to the European Parliament.

Meloni has argued that in previous elections governments “have legitimately been able to continue informing citizens about their activities, without institutional information being included in the calculation of equal conditions, as required by current law.”

In any case, Meloni has assured that his government “guarantees in Italy and Europe full respect for the founding values of the European Union and the commitment to Italy’s progress in the field of free information, the fight against fake news and pluralism in public service radio and television after decades of blatant political subdivision.”
