Meloni attributes a "higher incidence" of cases of sexual violence against women to immigrants

MADRID 25 Nov. () –

The Prime Minister of Italy, the far-right Giorgia Meloni, has stated on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women that there is a “higher incidence” of cases of sexual violence against women in immigrants.

“They will call me racist, but unfortunately there is a higher incidence of cases of sexual violence by immigrants, especially those who enter illegally,” he said in an interview with ‘Donna Moderna’ magazine.

In this sense, he explained that “when you have nothing” in life “a degeneration is generated that can lead anywhere.” Meloni highlighted that Italy has “very important” legislation on this issue. “I think that at this moment the challenge is above all cultural in nature,” he added.

His words come after the Minister of Education, Giuseppe Valditara, stated during an event to honor the memory of Giulia Cecchettin – a 22-year-old university student who was murdered by her ex-boyfriend in the Venice region – that “the increase in the phenomena of sexual violence” is linked to “forms of marginality and poverty” derived from “illegal immigration.”

Valditara also assured that patriarchy no longer exists. “Ideological paths never aim to solve problems but rather to affirm a personal vision of the world,” he added, as reported by the Italian television channel Rai News.

According to data collected by the Ministry of the Interior, between January 1 and November 3 of this year, 263 murders were recorded in Italy, 96 of them of women. Of this total, 82 were murdered in family or emotional contexts, while 51 died at the hands of their ex-partner.
