The Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, and the leader of La Liga, Matteo Salvini, cast their vote this Saturday in the European elections, elections that the head of the Italian Government has described as decisive for “the future” of the Union European.
“The future of Italy and Europe depends on you. Now everything is in your hands. Happy voting!” Meloni said on his social network account X after depositing his ballot at the Vittorio Bachelet school polling station. , south of Rome.
Meloni aspires to victory in the European elections and in which his formation, Brothers of Italy, could reach around 27 percent of the votes, according to the main polls, which also give him around 25 seats in the European Parliament.
Brothers of Italy, which in the last elections in 2019 barely obtained 6.4 percent of the votes and five seats, is now emerging as the great winner with a Meloni that seeks to assert its policies in Italy to take the great leap to Europe and try to condition community policies from Strasbourg and Brussels.
Salvini has also cast his vote, who has expressed his desire for the party to improve the current forecasts that predict an electoral disaster.
While Meloni’s Brothers of Italy are running as the big winners of the elections, Salvini’s League could see itself in the opposite scenario. The far-right party swept the 2019 elections with just over 34 percent of the votes and 29 seats in the European Parliament.
However, these five years have not been as fruitful as Salvini, Meloni’s main ally in the Italian Government, would have liked, since the polls place him in the middle of the fight with Forza Italia for fourth place in the European elections with barely 8 .5 percent of the votes and estimates of between seven and eight seats.
“We will be the party that will grow the most,” Salvini assured after voting at the Via Martinetti polling station in Milan, in comments reported by ‘La Repubblica’.
