The South Korean government has warned that it will take stern action against any illegal acts related to planned strikes by medical professors and community doctors, protesting the increase in admission quotas in medical schools.

The Korea Medical Association (KMA), the largest group of doctors, plans a one-day general strike, while medical professors at main hospitals have decided to go on indefinite strikes, starting next week. This raises concerns about a possible medical crisis. For its part, the KMA demands that government authorities suspend the procedure on the increase in admission fee of medical schools by 2025.

South Korean Government Urges Doctors to Avoid Planned Strikes While Strongly Warning

«The Government will try to persuade doctors, until the last moment, to avoid their planned collective strikes. Meanwhile, any illegal acts will receive a strong response,” announced Lee Han-kyung, head of disaster management at the Ministry of the Interior and Securityduring a government meeting.

The government will also maintain an emergency healthcare system to minimize the impact of a potential medical vacuum, Lee added, urging doctors to refrain from strikes and return to their jobs.

The disaster management chief asked doctors to prioritize the important value of human lives when making any decision.
