Mattel apologized after the toy maker “evil fashion dolls”were mistakenly tagged with a link to an adult entertainment website.
Instead of the film’s official website, which is WickedMovie.com, the doll packages accidentally included the pornographic website Wicked.com.
The website, which requires users to be 18 or older to enter, was printed on packaging for the dolls made for children ages 4 and up.
“Wicked Pictures was formed with a firm commitment to producing quality parody pornographic films,” a website description reads. “These forward-thinking ventures allow Wicked to explore new terrain while staying true to its core vision of producing quality parody porn films and strengthening its appeal for film productions.”
The “Wicked” dolls were launched last month ahead of the film’s premiere on Friday, November 22. They are inspired by characters from the film, including Elphaba, played by Cynthia Erivo, and Glinda, played by Ariana Grande.
Customers were quick to notice the error on the doll boxes, and many took to social media to call out Mattel.
“Hey @Mattel, whoever is responsible for the marketing/packaging of the new official Wicked dolls has made a HUGE mistake,” one person said. wrote in X. “The Wicked.com in your package takes you to a porn site!”
Other X user wrote“Whoever did this should be fired immediately because why would they do that knowing that it is mainly children who buy these dolls?”
In a statement to MassLive, Mattel said the company was aware of the misprint on the packaging of the dolls, which were only sold in the United States.
“Parents are cautioned that the incorrect and misprinted website is not appropriate for children,” the statement read. “We deeply regret this unfortunate error and are taking immediate steps to remedy it.”
Those who have already purchased the dolls are advised to discard the packaging or cover the link, Mattel said. People can also contact Mattel Customer Service for more information.
