Applications for the Master of Science, with a mention in Chemistry, will be open until January 27, 2023
Lorenzo Palma, Science in Chile.- “The program and the academic body are adapted to the needs and motivation of our students, to best meet the interests of the students,” begins by explaining Dr. Rodrigo Castillo, director of the program since its creation in 2021.
With a duration of four semesters, the Master of Science with mention in Chemistry It is presented as an option for continuing studies in the north of the country. The Northern Catholic University, based in Antofagasta, invites science students interested in acquiring knowledge in the theoretical and experimental field of chemistry. Similarly, once completing this program, there are various opportunities to develop such as being part of the different research projects associated with the Master’s academics, or carrying out teaching activities.
The director of the program, Dr. Rodrigo Castillo Rojas, who completed his doctoral studies at the Max Planck Institute for Physics and Chemistry of Solids in Dresden, Germany, where he learned to work with intermetallic compounds under extreme conditions of pressure and temperature, highlights the body scholar for his experience and motivation for teaching.
Faculty members include Dr. Rodrigo Castillo, Dr. Jonathan Cisterna, Dr. Darío Espinoza, Dr. Sandra Fuentes, Dr. Sergio Conejeros, Dr. Jaime Llanos, Dr. Ronald Nelson, and Dr. Claudia Núñez.
Dr. Castillo explains that there is a maintenance scholarship for students and that for this 2023 admission, full scholarships for maintenance, fees and tuition, similar to those offered by ANID, can be obtained for those who develop research projects where the central theme is lithium, specifically in the preparation of cathode materials for batteries and in their recycling.
The Master of Science program with a mention in Chemistry was born with the aim of training graduates with advanced knowledge in various areas of chemistry, where one of the main focuses will be to develop advanced human capital in the exercise of the profession. In this way, the graduate of this new UCN master’s plan will have solid knowledge that will allow him to join the productive sector, higher education institutions, research centers or join both national and foreign doctoral programs.
“We are a new program made up of young academics. There is a lot of motivation to support students, whether for conferences, studies and generating new collaboration networks” commented the director of the postgraduate course, and also commented that the first graduates of this master’s degree will be in March 2023.
development areas
Energy and Environment: In this line of work, aspects related to the search for materials that allow improving the efficiency of solar cells, whether photovoltaic or electrochemical, are addressed. In the environmental line, it is sought that these materials also have photocatalytic properties to be used in water decontamination and green hydrogen production, as well as the application of technologies that allow the remediation of contaminated soils, as well as the recovery of valuable elements from industrial waste.
Chemistry of Multifunctional and Organometallic Materials: In this line of research, nanomaterials with electrical, mechanical and optical properties for technological applications are synthesized and characterized. The synthesis and use of organometallic compounds as catalysts in the development of organic reactions and other related applications is also developed.
