This Thursday, MasOrange held the fourth edition of the ‘Sustainability Journalism and Communication Awards’, which recognize the work of journalists, communicators and disseminators in raising awareness of issues related to sustainability. application of technology to care for the environment and sustainability.
In an event presented by journalists Roberto Brasero and Mercedes Martín, which took place in the Downtown space in Madrid, MasOrange announced the winners and finalists of these awards, which have a prize of 24,000 euros, and those who aspired a total of 155 journalistic or informative works.
Sara Isabel Belled, José A. González and Diego Alonso (Vocento), Begoña Zubia and Inmaculada Álvarez (EiTB) and Irene Baños and Isabel Moreno (We are very green), have been the winners of the three categories considered -written, audiovisual media and new narratives-. The prizes per area have been distributed as follows: 5,000 euros for the winner; a second award of 2,000 euros; and a third prize of 1,000 euros.
WRITTEN MEDIA CATEGORY
In the written media category, the first prize went to the report ‘This is how the warming of the Mediterranean Sea affects us’, a collaboration between journalists Sara Isabel Belled, José A. González and Diego Alonso, from Vocento, in which, combining text and graphic resources, manage to “immerse” the reader in the serious problem that the warming of the seas and oceans poses for our planet, at the same time that possible solutions are presented.
The finalists in this category were the scientific popularizer Xavier Fonseca, for the article ‘Is global warming accelerating?’an example of the compendium of publications made between September 2023 and July 2024 in the Historias del Tiempo section, of La Voz de Galicia; and, thirdly, the journalist Juan Fernández González for ‘We are biodiversity (and we are in crisis)’, published in Climática.
AUDIOVISUAL CATEGORY
In the audiovisual category, the winners were Begoña Zubia and Inmaculada Álvarez, from the EITB program Teknopolis, for their didactic report ‘Rainwater is not so clean’, in which, through different case studies, carried out in Gipuzkoa and Girona through the Citypoll project, the polluting impact of cities on the rainwater cycle and its impact on the ecosystem is analyzed.
The second prize went to journalist Miguel Ángel Garrosa from Radio Bilbao (Cadena Ser), for ‘The point of no return of the Pyrenean glaciers’an extensive report, supported by data and testimonies, about the worrying situation of these bodies of water and their path towards extinction in the Pyrenean mountain range; while the third price has been for ‘We can still avoid the collapse of our civilization’, a space on the RNE-Radio 5 Natural Reserve program presented by Josefina Maestre, dedicated on this occasion to explaining that great sixth extinction in which the world is immersed.
DISCLOSURE WORK AND NEW NARRATIVES
For its part, in the category of informative work and new narratives the award went to ‘Manuela’s revolution’, episode 5 of the Good4Good video podcast ‘We are very green’, presented by the environmental journalist Irene Baños and the physicist, meteorologist and communicator Isabel Moreno. In this space it is evident, with a pleasant, positive and fun look, how our individual actions can make a difference.
The second prize was collected by Francisco Cai, Jesús Gálvez, Sristy García and Rodrigo Alcántara, students from the Francisco de Vitoria University who have developed ‘Whale Project’, a newsgame that seeks inform and raise awareness about one of the dangers that whales face due to human activity.
The last award in this category was for ‘An immersive journey through the history of business sustainability in Spain’, an interactive platform of the UN Global Compact Spain. This innovative gamified experience not only informs, but challenges transform sustainability into the business corealigned with ESG principles and the SDGs.
SPECIAL MENTION TO THE DIGITAL LITERACY OF THE YOUNGEST
During the event, A3Media and its Foundation were also recognized with a special mention for their digital literacy project Mentes AMI (Media and Information Literacy). This distinction was received by Patricia Pérez, corporate general director of Atresmedia and director of the Atresmedia Foundation.
This project, in which Platino Educa, UNIE University and the ‘la Caixa’ Foundation also collaborate, encourages the participation of children and young people as citizens responsible in the information society promoting and recognizing educational initiatives that encourage critical thinking, promote responsible audiovisual creativity, develop digital skills, and promote values and coexistence.
The jury for these awards has been made up of highly recognized professionals in the world of communication and raising awareness about sustainability: Roberto Brasero, head of the meteorology department at Antena 3 and Onda Cero; Mercedes Martín Gómez, graduate in Oceanography and Environment, and presenter of El Tiempo on Antena 3 Noticias; Andreu Escrivà, graduate in Environmental Sciences, master in Ecosystem Conservation and doctor in Biodiversity; Manuel Lencero, one of the founders of the social projects accelerator UnLtd Spain; and Mario Viciosa, head of Science at Newtral and El Objective de laSexta.
As host of the awards ceremony, the CEO of MASORANGE, Meinrad Spenger, had the opportunity to congratulate all the winners, thanking you for your contribution and effort with the dissemination and responsible awareness on issues that affect the climate and socioeconomic sustainability of the planet and people and communities.
