The leader of the French far-right Marine Le Pen has stated that, if her party governs after the legislative elections, it will be clear that the president, Emmanuel Macron, has an “honorary” role over the Armed Forces, an allusion to which the Government, Constitution in hand.
“Chief of the armies, for the president, is an honorary title,” Le Pen alleged in an interview in ‘Le Télégramme’, and then pointed out that the one who really “manages the accounts” is the prime minister. On behalf of the National Group, he aspires to head the Government of its leader, Jordan Bardella.
Bardella has already declared that he has “red lines”, as Le Pen has recalled, who has specifically alluded to the escalation of war in Ukraine. Macron has suggested that all options are on the table, but the former presidential candidate has warned that “the president will not be able to send troops” in the case of ‘cohabitation’.
The response of the current Executive has come through the Minister of Defense, Sebastian Lecornu, who on social networks has stated: “The Constitution is not honorary.” Thus, he has shared articles in which it is established that “the president of the Republic is the head of the armies.”
The president of the Democratic Movement (Modem), François Bayrou, an ally of Macron, has also been critical of Le Pen. He has called the statements of far-right politics “extremely serious” and has accused him of distancing himself “deeply” from the Constitution.
Le Pen responded to Bayrou by reminding him that in December 1999 the then Prime Minister, Lionel Jospinl, blocked the sending of troops to the Ivory Coast proposed by the President, Jacques Chirac. “The Constitution, the entire Constitution, nothing more than the Constitution,” he stressed.
