( Spanish) – He Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Conscience 2024 has been awarded to María Corina Machado and Edmundo González Urrutia, Venezuelan opposition leaders, for their fight for democracy, the European Union announced this Thursday.
“The Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Conscience 2024 is awarded to María Corina Machado and the president-elect Edmundo González Urrutia for their brave fight to restore freedom and democracy,” said the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola.
Since September, Edmundo González Urrutia has been in Spain, where he requested political asylum after leaving Venezuela.
This award, created in 1988, recognizes individuals, groups and organizations that have made an outstanding contribution to the protection of freedom of thought. The winners receive support from the European Union in their efforts to defend their causes, according to the European Parliament website.
The award ceremony will be on December 18 in Strasbourg, during the plenary session of Parliament.
In Venezuela, a post-electoral conflict broke out on July 28 when the National Electoral Council (CNE) declared the current president, Nicolás Maduro, the winner over the candidate of the opposition majority, Edmundo González Urrutia, amid allegations of fraud and without that to date a detail of votes by center and voting stations is known.
