May 3 was proclaimed as the World Day of Press Freedom in 1993by general Assembly of the United Nations, following the recommendation of the General Conference of the UNESCO.
The date was chosen to coincide with the anniversary of the Windhoek Declaration, in which representatives of African media participating in a seminar organized by UNESCO in the capital of Namibia, prepared a document setting out the principles of Press freedom.
