A man considered “dangerous” by Romanian authorities set fire to a shop outside the security checkpoint inside the parliament in Bucharest on Tuesday and then fled, an incident that forced security forces to evacuate 300 people.
The Romanian Gendarmerie said the incident occurred at around 1.50pm (local time) in a souvenir shop next to an exhibition hall inside the Parliament, which is open to the public.
The man, who was wearing a vest and a checked shirt, set fire to various goods that were inside the shop after an apparent altercation and fled. The fire was extinguished by forces from the General Inspection of Emergency Situations, although no injuries were reported.
The suspect, 56 years old and from the city of Vaslui, faces a prison sentence of 2 to 7 years for damaging public property. The Romanian authorities have opened an investigation into what happened and have activated a search protocol, according to the Adevarul website.
