The president of the World Bank, David Malpass, announced Wednesday that he will leave office on June 30, with the purpose of tackling “new challenges.”
“After thinking about it a lot, I decided to look for new challenges,” he wrote in a statement from the bank, after announcing his decision to the board of directors.
“This afternoon I met with the Board of Executive Directors of the World Bank group and informed them of my intention to leave by June 30 of this fiscal year. It has been an honor and privilege to serve as president of the World Bank,” he added.
Malpass, 66, was appointed to the postby the former president of the United States,Donald Trump. He began his 5-year term on April 9, 2019. He also served as the head of international affairs for the US Treasury Department.
The president of the Bank was harshly criticized by the Democratic caucus in the US Congress, after he responded in September that he had no knowledge about whether the burning of fossil fuels caused global warming. “I don’t even know. I am not a scientist, ”he said in this regard, during an event organized for Climate Week in New York.
