The Malaysian Federal Court has rejected former Prime Minister Najib Razak’s attempt to postpone his appeal against his 12-year prison sentence on corruption charges, according to the Bernama news agency.
This decision comes after the panel of five members of the country’s highest judicial body, headed by its president, Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, rejected the request issued by Najib’s legal team, so the hearing will be held on the 18th. August, according to the local media.
“Actually, there is no new or additional evidence to admit, as the applicant (Najib) and his defense team had in their possession all the evidence that they now seek to present as additional or new evidence,” lead prosecutor Datuk said. Sithambaram, according to the newspaper ‘News Straits Times’.
Najib was sentenced in 2020 to twelve years in prison in the first of a series of open trials against him for corruption cases during his term, which ended in 2018 after an electoral defeat in which his image was marked by the accusations, which he has rejected at all times.
His sentence was confirmed by the Court of Appeals on December 8 last year. The former Malaysian Prime Minister was released on bail pending his final appeal to the Federal Court.
Najib, ousted by a coalition led by former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, has faced accusations of money laundering since The Wall Street Journal reported in 2015 that $681 million had been transferred to one of his personal accounts.
The former prime minister was found guilty of money laundering, abuse of duties and breach of trust after the alleged theft of almost ten million dollars (about 8.8 million euros) from SRC International, a subsidiary of 1MDB, a state fund Created by Najib.
