Maduro transfers his support to Al Assad in the face of the jihadist offensive in Syria

MADRID Dec. 2 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, has had a telephone conversation with his Syrian counterpart, Bashar al Assad, in which he has taken the opportunity to convey the support of Caracas in the face of the offensive launched by rebels and jihadists on the Syrian province of Aleppo.

“Maduro has stated that the Government and the population of Venezuela support Syria in its fight against terrorism and its sponsoring countries,” the Syrian Ministry of Defense detailed in a statement posted on its official profile on the social network Facebook.

Thus, Maduro has accused the United States and its Western allies of trying to “weaken Syria”, to which Al Assad has responded that “the destiny of independent peoples is to confront the United States’ plans against them.” .

The offensive by rebels and jihadists, led by the Hayat Tahrir al Sham (HTS) group, has led to fighting mainly in Aleppo, the epicenter of a new escalation that has once again put the country in check. Damascus has responded by also relying on its allied countries and, in fact, the Syrian Ministry of Defense has confirmed the involvement of Russian forces in the attacks.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has confirmed “intense bombing” by Syria and Russia against rebel-controlled areas in the provinces of Idlib, Aleppo and Hama and has stated that Syrian warplanes would have returned to the use of ‘barrel bombs’ , just as they did in previous stages of the war.

In addition, the Observatory has raised the death toll since the start of the offensive to around 450, 57 of them civilians. According to the Syrian Ministry of Defense, more than 400 “terrorists” have been “eliminated” in the last 24 hours.
