The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, has started his state visit to China with references to the war in Ukraine, a conflict in which he believes that the Asian giant can play “an important role” given the political relations it maintains. with the Russian government.

Macron, who has addressed the French community during a meeting at the Embassy, ​​recalled that Beijing maintains “a close relationship” with Moscow, as was evident with the recent visit to the Russian capital by Chinese President Xi Jinping, who will receive not only the French president but also the head of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen.

The French president stressed that China, as a signatory country to the United Nations Charter, is also called upon to work in favor of territorial integrity and national sovereignty, which means, for example, advancing together on “a path towards peace”. in Ukraine, invaded militarily by Russia.

Beijing has proposed its own peace plan to resolve the conflict and, although Macron has made it clear that he cannot agree with the entirety of this initiative, he considers it a sign of the apparent willingness of the Chinese authorities to get involved in some way. in conflict resolution.

“I hope you can participate in initiatives that are useful for the Ukrainian population,” Macron claimed, who will hold a first meeting with Xi this Thursday.
