Macron sends a letter to Biden to “appreciate his courage” and his “spirit of responsibility”

French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday sent a letter to his US counterpart Joe Biden in which he “appreciates his courage”, his “spirit of responsibility” and his “sense of duty” after he submitted his resignation from the presidential re-election bid in favour of Vice President Kamala Harris, following several days of pressure following his poor performance in the debate against the Republican candidate, former President Donald Trump.

“I appreciate the courage, the spirit of responsibility and the sense of duty that led you to take this decision,” reads a statement from the Elysée, reported by French television channel BFMTV.

However, Macron did not mention either presidential candidate and expressed his desire to preserve the “historical relations between the two countries” based on the “spirit of partnership between the two shores of the Atlantic.”
