Considers that Israel is ignoring the international community and asks it to defend itself by complying with international law
Oct. 5 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, advocated this Saturday for the suspension of arms shipments to Israel as a measure of pressure for the Israeli Government to suspend its military campaign in Gaza.
Macron made these statements in an interview with the France Inter radio station where he denounced that the Israeli Government seems to be ignoring the mediation efforts of the international community.
“We condemn with the utmost firmness the Hamas terrorist attack of October 7, and recognize Israel’s right to defend itself. But it must do so as a democracy, respecting International and Humanitarian law.”
“Terrorism is not fought by sacrificing a civilian population,” the president added before lamenting that “Israel is not listening, and that represents a problem now and for the future security of Israelis.”
In this sense, and in a veiled message to the United States, the main supplier of weapons to Israel, the French president has proposed the suspension of shipments. “The priority is that we stop delivering weapons that are being used to carry out the fighting in Gaza,” the president indicated.
Finally, and regarding the situation in Lebanon, where Israel has begun an invasion of the south of the country against the Hezbollah militias, Macron has asked “the Lebanese people not to end up sacrificed” in this conflict.
“Lebanon cannot become a new Gaza,” declared the French president, before insisting on the need for the Lebanese Government, currently in office and without a president for two years, to end up being restored as an executive body with full rights to through holding new elections.
