Macron keeps Attal as prime minister “for the moment” for “the stability of France”

The French President, Emmanuel Macronhas rejected “for the moment” the immediate resignation of the Prime Minister, Gabriel Attalwhile the political forces agree on a candidate after the legislative elections this Sunday. Attal presented his resignation as prime minister to the president on Monday, but will remain in office until Macron has proposals for a replacement.

The French president received the prime minister at the Elysée Palace on Monday morning and asked him to remain in office to guarantee “the stability of the country.” There is no deadline.

Attal’s replacement as leader of the Government is an unknown after Sunday’s results. The left-wing alliance, New Popular Front, won the elections, but did not achieve an absolute majority. In second place were the liberal centrist parties, led by Macron. And in third place was Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally.

The New Popular Front has assured that this week it will propose a candidate to Macron. And it has warned that it will not govern alongside the French president, but will do so with his programme of individual formdespite the fact that they do not have a majority in the National Assembly and the ability of political forces to reach agreements will be essential.

The French Prime Minister had already announced after the results of the second round of the legislative elections were known last night, in which his group lost the relative majority with which he had governed, that would resign but could continue in office “as long as duty requires.”

Especially considering that France organizes the Paris Olympicswhich will take place from 26 July to 11 August, and which represent a challenge, especially in terms of security, a topic that is very much on the agenda of the election campaign and which Marine Le Pen’s far-right party, National Rally, is taking advantage of.

Macron, for his part, assured last night that he was going to take time to examine the results of the elections and to check “the structure of the new National Assembly”. From there, it would decide on the government that could be formed.

The head of state, who in France He is the one who appoints the Prime Minister – although the latter then has to answer to the National Assembly, since the Chamber can overthrow him with a motion of censure – and assured that “in his role as guarantor of the institutions, he will ensure that the sovereign decision of the French is respected.”

It remains to be seen whether the same structure of the Government will be maintained in this new provisional phase, with the main pillars being the Minister of the Interior, Gerald Darmaninresponsible for security at the Olympic Games, or the Minister of Economy and Finance, Bruno Le Maire.
