Macron greets Milei with a hug at the Elysee Palace to put the controversies between the two countries behind him

The President of France, Emmanuel Macronreceived his Argentine counterpart at the Elysee Palace on Friday, Javier Mileiwith a hug and many smiles in what is the first bilateral meeting between the two countries and which takes place after the distancing of both countries since the election of the latter at the end of 2023.

According to the Elysée, the two leaders will discuss opportunities “to strengthen ties by launching new projects in the energy transition, defence, science and culture” on the occasion of Milei’s presence in the French capital to attend the opening of the Olympic Games, which are taking place this afternoon.

Also “They will share an analysis of the major international challenges”added the French Presidency.

The meeting between the two leaders is expected to last less than an hour, as Macron will receive Israeli President Isaac Herzog at 12 noon local time.

Beyond the obvious ideological differences between Macron and Milei, the interview takes place when there are still embers of the controversy over the Racist and homophobic chants by members of the Argentine football team against the French in full celebration for the recent achievement of the Copa America title.

After their meeting at the Elysee Palace, Milei will meet with French businessmen at the Argentine embassy in Francein an event closed to the press.

He will then attend the reception hosted by the French President in honour of the Heads of State and Government visiting Paris ahead of the official opening of the Paris 2024 Games, which will begin at 7.30pm local time.
